Ramlila body raises concerns over Ramayana, seeks pre-release screening

Ramlila body raises concerns over Ramayana, seeks pre-release screening

The Shri Ramlila Mahasangh has written to the makers of actor Ranbir Kapoor's upcoming film Ramayana, requesting a special screening before its release, claiming that certain scenes in the movie could potentially hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus.

Speaking to PTI, the organisation's president, Arjun Kumar, said a letter had been sent to director Nitesh Tiwari and the film's production house, urging them to allow representatives of the Mahasangh to watch the film before it arrives in cinemas during the Diwali season.

Kumar said the request was prompted by the controversy surrounding the 2023 film Adipurush, which drew criticism from members of the Sanatan community and people associated with traditional Ramlila performances.

According to Kumar, objections to Adipurush were related to the depiction of Lanka as well as the portrayal of Ravana and his army.

"We promoted Adipurush without watching the movie before its release, and that movie depicted certain things from Ramayana inaccurately. We don't want to repeat the same mistake since Ramayana belongs to billions of people," Kumar told PTI. : THESE controversial Adipurush dialogues changed after public uproar. Details inside!

The organisation further claimed that it had received information indicating that some scenes in Ramayana might offend the religious sentiments of Hindus in India and abroad.

The Mahasangh stated that it wanted to ensure that any objectionable scenes or dialogues, if identified, were removed before the film's release.

Kumar also warned that if the makers did not agree to the request and the film was released without a pre-screening, the Mahasangh, along with other Hindu organisations, would organise protests and demonstrations outside cinema halls in Delhi and other parts of the country.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana is among the most highly anticipated films in Indian cinema and stars Ranbir Kapoor in a leading role. : 'Ramayana' Trailer Out: Ranbir Kapoor's Ram, Yash's Ravana Promise Epic Visual Spectacle ()
