Police on Tuesday arrested a youth for allegedly drinking beer on a boat in the Ganga after a video of the incident went viral on social media.
The viral clip, which surfaced on Monday, showed a group of youths dancing on a boat, playing loud DJ music and drinking beer on the river. During investigation, police found that the boat was heading towards the Shitla Mata Temple.
Earlier this month during Ramzan, police had arrested 14 youths for organizing a biryani party on a boat in the Ganga and allegedly dumping food leftovers into the river.
Officials clarified that there is no specific law banning the consumption of non-vegetarian food on boats in the Ganga. However, such acts, especially near religiously significant ghats in Varanasi, can attract legal action under provisions related to public nuisance or hurting religious sentiments, police sources said.
