WHAT IS THE TRUTH?

We verified if the Tamil Nadu government is actually converting the entire existing bus fleet to AC buses. We analyzed the recent announcements made by the state government and found the viral claim to be misleading.

​We reviewed the news reports from June 2026, including an article published by The Times of India. The official announcement made by Tamil Nadu's Transport Minister, Vijay Tamilan Parthiban, clearly states that all newly purchased government buses in the state will be equipped with air-conditioning. ​The minister clarified, "In the future, all new buses will have ACs". This means the state government will henceforth procure only AC buses to add to its public transport fleet.

​This decision was made under the instructions of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to modernize the bus network and ensure that commuters can travel comfortably in the state's hot and humid climate. It does not mean that the existing non-AC buses currently operating across Tamil Nadu are being immediately scrapped or upgraded.

This announcement follows the recent launch of 300 new state buses, which included both diesel and BS-VI compliant CNG vehicles, a high-profile event where CM Vijay interacted with commuters and transport staff.
