Covid-19 update: India reports nearly 3 lakh cases, 2023 deaths in record spike

New Delhi: In the last 24-hour, India has reported 2,95,041 new cases, while 2,023 people were reported to be dead due to the novel virus. It is India's biggest one day spike ever since the onset of the pandemic. Meanwhile, Prime Minister in his address to nation on Tuesday ruled out the possibility of a nationwide lockdown and asked states to use lockdowns only as the last resort.

This is for the seventh straight day that the country have reported over two lakh new cases. With 1.56 crore covid cases, India is world's second worst affected country, behind the United States.

Maharashtra, the worst-affected state, on Tuesday reported 62,097 fresh coronavirus cases, taking the tally to over 39.6 lakh. In the same time, 519 more patients died of the infection. It is expected that the Maharashtra chief minister may announce a 15-day-long lockdown in the state today even as lockdown-like stringent restrictions are already in place in the state.

Delhi on Tuesday reported 28,395 new coronavirus which is its biggest ever single-day spike. After several appeals from Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Health Minister Satyendar Jain for oxygen supply at hospitals, there was relief for some of the city's biggest hospitals after they received stocks of medical oxygen on Tuesday. The Delhi CM has isolated himself after his wife tested positive for the virus.

Uttar Pradesh, the second worst affected state by the pandemic, reported 30,000 new cases of the infection. The state will offer the Covid vaccine free of cost from May 1 to everyone above 18, as announced by chief minister Yogi Adityanath.

The southern states of Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have also been reporting high surge in daily number of infections.
