Divya Dutta Talks Patriarchal Mindset and Female Empowerment Through 'Chiraiya'

Bollyy 1 month ago

Divya Dutta, who won the National Award for Irada (2017), is currently garnering attention for her web series Chiraiya. Through this series, which is based on the sensitive issue of marital rape, she brings an important subject to the forefront.

In a recent interview, she spoke candidly about her series, women's insecurities, the importance of women empowerment, and patriarchal thinking. Here are the key excerpts from the conversation:

What made you choose a story like 'Chiraiya'?

First of all, the story is very strong. It is so impactful that no actor would want to say no to it. When I was told that this role was meant for me, I felt extremely honored.

'Chiraiya' deals with a sensitive issue like marital rape. What are your thoughts on it?

Chiraiya is the story of a woman whose life seems beautiful on the surface. However, what appears normal to her is actually not. But then, who decides what is right and what is wrong? In our society, many people are not even aware of this difference. Things just continue as a pattern. We are not trying to start a movement, but the story feels so real that it makes you think about raising awareness, because many people don't even realize that such things happen to women. Your series shows a woman standing up for another woman. How important is that support today?

It is very important because many women in our society are unable to speak for themselves. If someone can set aside their own perspective, listen, and support another woman, it becomes a very positive step for society. Even in the show, a woman stands up for another in a relationship like that of a sister-in-law, where usually insecurity and rivalry are discussed. Showing such support is truly beautiful. Have you ever challenged patriarchal thinking in your personal life?

My mother was a single parent. I lost my father at a very young age, and she raised me on her own. She gave me the freedom to make my own choices. She once told me that she was expected to become a doctor, so she did, even though she loved writing. She didn't have the freedom to choose, so she made sure I did. That freedom stayed with me. Even today, if someone tries to restrict me, I don't like it, and if I feel the need to speak up, I do.

Are women-centric stories getting more space today?

Yes, absolutely. Especially with the rise of OTT platforms, women's stories have found a stronger platform. Earlier, female characters were limited to certain roles, but now their lives are being explored in depth. Stories of women above 40 are also being told, which were often ignored earlier. What is the social message of this story?

This story brings forward an issue that people don't openly talk about. Many women themselves are not able to understand what is right and what is wrong in their own lives.
