Jagdeep Soorma Bhopali: Sholay Iconic Role

Looking back at the '60s and '70s, Jagdeep was at the top of his acting. This was the time when Mehmood ji was getting older, and Johny Walker ji had almost retired. Then came the legendary role of 'Soorma Bhopali' in 'Sholay' (1975).

While the character was brilliantly written by Salim-Javed, it was Jagdeep's perfect Bhopali accent that made it a legend. Even today, people remember his dialogue, 'Mera naam bhi Soorma Bhopali aise hi nahin hai'. Jaaved recalls how even stars like Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan couldn't stop laughing during the scene where they ask Soorma for money after stepping out of jail. Jagdeep even went on to direct a film titled 'Soorma Bhopali' in 1988.

There is another amazing story involving the world-famous boxer Muhammad Ali. In Feroz Khan's 'Qurbani' (1980), Jagdeep played a character named Muhammad Ali. Around that time, the real Muhammad Ali was visiting the Middle East for charity. Jagdeep was also there, and the two were put in a ring for a mock fight. Jagdeep performed such funny antics that the champion boxer couldn't stop laughing.

Jaaved shares that although his father was a comedian on screen, he was a very serious man in real life. He had faced many 'slaps of life'. Much like Charlie Chaplin, he made people laugh while carrying his own tragedies inside his heart.

Jagdeep had a lot of interest in poetry and history. He even taught himself English and spent time with creative geniuses like K. Asif and Guru Dutt.

Talking about his childhood, Jaaved remembers living in a small one-bedroom apartment on Turner Road in Bandra. Even though he was a big star, Jagdeep kept his family grounded.

Jaaved studied at St. Teresa High School, where kids from slums and skyscrapers shared the same bench. That was the greatest gift of his childhood.

Jagdeep had a childlike love for chocolates. When he first visited New York, he stuffed his pockets with chocolates. His love for chocolates was because he never had them as a child. He also loved sweets like petha and gajak, which reminded him of his hometown in Madhya Pradesh.

In his later years, when he wasn't getting the work he deserved, Jagdeep became a bit quieter and more spiritual. He always said that he didn't act for those critics who lived in tall buildings and criticised as per their opinion; he acted for the common man, the farmers, and the rickshaw pullers who were his real audience.

The saddest moment of his life was in 1991 when his mother passed away. Jagdeep sobbed like a child during her funeral.

Jagdeep married Najma, and their daughter is Muskaan Jafri. She is a talented actor today. Despite some family turmoil, Jaaved never held a grudge against his father, respecting him for doing his best.
