Early life and education
Lara was born on April 16, 1978, in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, to a Punjabi Hindu father and an Anglo-Indian mother. Her father was Wing Commander L.K. Dutta (retired), and her mother is Jennifer Maureen Dutta (Nation Story). Renowned musician and DJ Nitin Sawhney is her cousin. In 1981, the family moved to Bangalore, where Lara completed high school at St. Francis Xavier Girls' High School and Frank Anthony Public School. She later earned a bachelor's degree in economics with a minor in communications from the University of Mumbai. She is fluent in English, Hindi, Punjabi, and Kannada, which reflects her versatile personality. Brimming with beauty and confidence since childhood, Lara has always faced challenges boldly.
Golden Age of Pageantry
Before Lara entered the cinema, pageantry brought her international recognition. After winning the Gladrags Manhunt and Megamodel contest in 1995, she participated in the 1997 Miss Intercontinental pageant and was crowned Miss India Universe. In 2000, she won the Femina Miss India Universe title, which she then won for India at the Miss Universe 2000 pageant held in Cyprus. She made her Bollywood debut in 2003 with Andaaz, playing Kajal opposite Akshay Kumar. Her voice was dubbed by Mona Ghosh Shetty because the directors wanted two distinct characters. The film was a superhit and earned Lara the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award. Derek Elley of Variety praised her acting abilities. That same year, she played the village girl Kesar opposite Abhishek Bachchan in Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost.
In 2004, she appeared in Khakee (cameo), Masti (Monica), Bardaast (lawyer), the Tamil film Arasatchi, and Aan: Men at Work. Masti was a commercial success. 2005 was her turning point-Insaan, Elaan, Juram, Kaal, No Entry, and Dosti: Friends Forever. Partner became the top grosser of the year. Also, a special appearance in Om Shanti Om. In 2008, Jumbo (voiceover) and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (special song). In 2010, Billu Barber (Bindiya), Do Not Disturb, Blue, and Housefull (Gujarati bartender). Housefull earned 114 crores.
Break, Comeback, and OTT Success
In 2011, Chalo Dilli (producer and lead role: Miheeka) was a moderate success. She also sang in Don 2 with Shah Rukh Khan. After her pregnancy, she made a comeback in 2013 with David (Neelam/Gayatri). In 2015, she starred in Singh Is Bliing, and in 2016, she starred in Fitoor (Leena) and Azhar (lawyer). Welcome to New York (2018) was a flop.
