Story

The eight-episode web series"Maa Ka Sam"revolves around Delhi-based 19-year-old math whiz Agastya (Mihir Ahuja) and his single mother Vinita (Vinni) (Mona Singh). Agastya (Mihir Ahuja) is a smart, intelligent college student. Vinita has had a difficult life. Her husband suddenly left her and she has raised her son Agastya single-handedly. She now works as a real estate agent. Agastya's mother has told him that he must find a separate home once he turns twenty. Having suffered neglect and emotional deprivation since childhood, he doesn't consider love a natural feeling. Instead, he begins developing an algorithm to find the perfect partner for his mother. Agastya wants to see Vinita married before leaving home. Therefore, he searches for a precise algorithm that can find her the perfect match. In his pursuit of addition and subtraction, he forgets that humans are a product of their imperfections. No artificial intelligence can solve them. Parallel to the mother-son story, Agastya's love story and college journey also unfold. Initially, he is in a relationship with Annie (Celeste Bairagi), but their paths eventually diverge, but they remain good friends. Then, he develops a relationship with the college's new math teacher (Angira Dhar). The question now is: will Agastya truly find the perfect partner for his mother? Will Vinita be able to start a new life? What happens in Agastya's own life?

Review

This series has some excellent parts and some dull ones. Sadly, the writers and director chose a brilliant and contemporary subject, but they failed to do it justice on the writing table. The entire series falls apart after four episodes. The ending isn't particularly unique. Nicholas Kharkongor, who directed the highly popular 2019 series "Axone," falls short this time.
If Nicholas hadn't stretched the series' length like a rubber band, it could have been a great family series. There's no need to elaborate on all the topics, as unnecessary details distract the viewer. Another major drawback is that everything, from the home to the college classroom and the cafe, feels like a set. Therefore, everything falls flat. The attempt to create an impression of depth is lacking. The most interesting part of the show is the conversations between hardworking property agent Vinita and her beloved son, Agastya, which range from tender and affectionate to irritable and angry. The director has captured the emotions between mother and son perfectly. While the conversations between mother and son remain consistent, the father's absence has forced them to become more dependent on each other than they might have been if they had been part of a larger family. The filmmaker has also subtly depicted the mother-son relationship, brilliantly portraying both closeness and emotional distance.
The highlight of this series is that the women express themselves openly and candidly. Vinita doesn't want to upset her son, who has become angry and irrational because she has dared to find someone of her own choosing. To some extent, the filmmaker has also attempted to highlight the mother's own dreams and feelings in this series. The filmmaker also effectively raises the issue of moral policing of a beautiful woman, especially in Delhi University, where topics like dating and finding a suitable partner are bound by gender boundaries even in Delhi's supposedly "liberal" spaces.

Acting

Mihir Ahuja has mastered the role of Agastya, a 19-year-old college student and math whiz. He effortlessly portrays the role of a son worried about his mother. He brilliantly portrays the trauma of his father's sudden departure from his childhood. Mona Singh's performance as Vinita, a single mother willing to be sensitive, is superb. Her dressing style and thinking are modern. From maintaining a friendly relationship with her son Agastya to valuing his opinions, Mona Singh does full justice to the role.
She had previously disappointed in the recently released film "Subedar," but the scenes where she openly flirts with an unmarried and affable angel investor (Ranveer Brar) are truly heartwarming.
Angira Dhar impresses as Ira, a young math professor just returned from Stanford University, USA. Chef-turned-actor Ranveer Brar wins hearts in some scenes. The rest of the cast is fully immersed in their roles.
