The Ultimate Sacrifice: How Savitri Gave Up Her Own Son Arjun to Protect Raja Kumar

The story starts with Bhim Singh. He worked as the manager and bodyguard for Seth Raja Singh. He saved Raja Singh from many deadly attacks planned by his stepbrother Girdhar Singh. One day Raja Singh appointed Bhim Singh's wife Savitri as the trustee of his entire property. He also made her the guardian of his young son Raja Kumar. Unfortunately Girdhar Singh killed both Raja Singh and Bhim Singh on that very same day. Savitri promised her dying husband that she would protect Raja Kumar even at the cost of her own life. The whole world and Bhim Singh's father Dashrath Singh thought Savitri was the killer. Everyone believed she killed her husband and boss for money. Savitri handed over her own son Arjun to her father in law Dashrath Singh. She pretended to be Raja Kumar's mother to keep him safe from Girdhar Singh.

Arjun Uncovers the Shocking Truth About His Mother Savitri

Arjun grew up under the care of his grandfather Dashrath Singh. He turned out to be a very simple and innocent man. He came to the city to make his own identity once he grew up. He got a job as a bellboy in a five star hotel. During this time he met Poonam and they fell in love. That hotel actually belonged to Raja Kumar and Savitri was running it. The hotel manager was Ranjit Singh. Ranjit was actually the son of Girdhar Singh. He was planning to kill Raja Kumar just like his father wanted. These people created a web of lies to make Raja believe that Savitri was his enemy. Gradually Arjun found out the truth that Savitri was not Raja's mother but his own biological mother. Arjun took an oath to protect Raja just like his father Bhim Singh did. Meanwhile Raja met a beautiful dancer named Nisha. Ranjit had sent Nisha to kill Raja. But Nisha fell in love with Raja and could not bring herself to kill him. Finally she organized a boat party on Ranjit's orders but Arjun arrived there and saved Raja's life. At the end of the story the villains kidnapped the family members of Arjun and Raja. They wanted Raja to transfer all his property to them. Arjun and Raja teamed up and beat up all the goons. In the end Raja married Nisha and Arjun married Poonam. Everyone came together and accepted their mother Savitri.

There is a very interesting story about the casting of this film. Prakash Mehra originally wanted Rajesh Khanna for the role of Raja Singh. He thought it would be a kind of poetic justice after the movie 'Namak Haraam'. Amitabh and Rajesh Khanna were together in that film. But things did not work out because of the rivalry between Amitabh and Rajesh Khanna. Mehra then thought about Raj Babbar but finally this role went to Shashi Kapoor.Amitabh's character Arjun Singh was actually inspired by the character Hrundi Bakshi from the 1968 Hollywood film 'The Party'. That role was played by Peter Sellers. Prakash Mehra usually had music by Kalyanji-Anandji in his films. But this was the first time he worked with Bappi Lahiri. The song "Pag Ghungroo Baandh" became a massive hit. Kishore Kumar won his fifth Filmfare Award for this song.

This was the first time disco beats were fused with classical sargam. Smita Patil was very hesitant to do the famous rain song "Aaj Rapat Jaaye". She finally agreed after Amitabh Bachchan convinced her a lot.
This movie became the third highest grossing film of 1982. It did a business of 120 million back then. It is considered the biggest comedy blockbuster in India. According to records more than 2 crore tickets were sold.
People still hum the songs like 'Jawani Jan-e-Man', 'Pag Ghungroo Baandh', 'Aaj Rapat Jaaye To', 'Thodi Si Jo Pee Li Hai' and 'Raat Baaki'.
Tanishk Bagchi later recreated 'Raat Baaki' for the film 'Ittefaq'.
That one dialogue is still on everyone's lips. The part where Amitabh says 'I can talk English, I can walk English...' is one of the most iconic scenes of his career.

There was a classical part in the song 'Pag Ghungroo Baandh Meera Nachi' sung by Kishore Kumar. The specific classical notes like (Sa Sa Sa Re Ga Re Ga Pa Ni Ni Sa Sa Sa) were actually sung by classical singer P. Satyanarayan Mishra.
When the film started in 1978 Vinod Khanna was supposed to do Shashi Kapoor's role. Vinod left the film because of some issues with Prakash Mehra.
Shashi Kapoor's wife Jennifer Kendal designed the clothes for Shashi Kapoor in this movie. She was advised to design clothes suitable for a 25 year old young Kapoor. Shashi was actually 44 years old during the shooting of the film.
Waheeda Rehman in real life is only a few years older than Amitabh Bachchan. She is almost the same age as Shashi Kapoor. Still she played the role of their mother or a mother figure in the film.

Ashok Kumar was signed for this film but later Om Prakash replaced him.
Bappi Lahiri shared that Prakash Mehra came to his house with the lyrics of 'Pag Ghungroo'. He wanted Bappi to compose these words in a fusion style. It is said that Bappi's mother was also there at that time. Prakash Ji asked her to sing those lines in her voice because she was a great classical singer. Bappi Da's mother sang 'Pag Ghungroo Baandh Meera Nachi Thi' in a classical way. As soon as she finished the line Bappi Da added the disco beat right after those words. As soon as Bappi Da finished his music part Prakash Mehra stood up. He said, "this is my song."

This film was also released in cinema halls in Canada.
Amjad Khan was given the villain's role in the initial casting. Satyen Kappu played that role after Amjad met with an accident.
Amitabh hangs a woman upside down in the film 'Namak Halaal'. He does this so that the stolen wallet hidden in her bra falls down. Similarly in the film 'Hum' Amitabh hangs Kimi Katkar upside down. He does that so that a coin hidden in her bra falls down.
Om Prakash, Ranjeet, Satyen Kappu and Suresh Oberoi also played important roles in the film.
This movie was later remade in Telugu as 'Bhale Ramudu' and in Tamil as 'Velaikaran'.
Released on 30 April 1982 this film is still a cult classic for movie lovers. It received many nominations in Filmfare. Amitabh was nominated for Best Actor and Shashi Kapoor for Best Supporting Actor. Bappi Lahiri was nominated for Best Music and Anjaan for Best Lyrics.
