Two-Day National Seminar on 'Unparalleled Udaipur: Heritage, Society and Vision' Begins

Udaipur, August 13 (Daily Kiran News) - The Department of History at Mohanlal Sukhadia University, Udaipur, has commenced a two-day national seminar titled 'Unparalleled Udaipur: Heritage, Society and Vision' , being held at the universityguest house on August 13-14 under RUSA 2.0.

Assistant Professor Dr. Piyush Bhadawia said the seminar is aimed at exploring Udaipur's heritage, social fabric, and vision for sustainable growth.

Chief guest and keynote speaker, Prof. Chandrashekhar Sharma, Head of the History Department at Meera Girls College, highlighted that Udaipur's heritage originates from its rulers' association with Eklingnath, and the selection of this region by Shrinathji reflects divine will. He stressed that although nestled in the Aravalli hills, the range is no longer fully protected. According to him, Udaipur's main legacy is freedom and self-respect, and preserving heritage sites like Manjhi's temple is vital for retaining historical knowledge. He emphasised sustainable tourism as essential for the city's future.

Special guest Prof. Narayan Singh Rao, Head of the History Department at the Central University of Himachal Pradesh, spoke on Maharana Udai Singh's foresight in establishing Udaipur in a location that ensured natural security. He noted Udaipur's commercial importance and called for improved waste management.

Another special guest, Dr. Anil Mehta, Principal of Vidya Bhawan Polytechnic College, discussed Udaipur's martial, cultural, and other heritage aspects. While acknowledging its titles like Zinc City, Lake City, Temple City, and Millet City, he opposed nicknames such as Wedding City, Romantic City, Drug City, and Infertility City. He also underlined the significance of Udaipur being declared a Wetland City under the Ramsar Convention, home to 100 migratory bird species.

Presidential Address

Presiding over the event, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sunita Mishra stressed the need for lake conservation, developing Rayta Hill as an eco-tourism site, enhancing cleanliness, and preserving the city's traditional knowledge.

The seminar began with a welcome address by Prof. Pratibha, Head of the Department and seminar convener, outlining its various dimensions. The vote of thanks was delivered by Prof. Digvijay Bhatnagar, Dean of Social Sciences. The event was conducted by Swati Lodha and Sapna Mavatwal.

The seminar saw participation from a large number of academicians, experts, and dignitaries, including Prof. Sushila Shaktawat, Prof. Vimal Sharma, Prof. Saroj Gupta, Prof. Anita Kawadia, Dr. Manish Shrimali, Dr. Mahesh Sharma, and several others from the academic and local community.
