HYDERABAD: An unauthorized building consisting of ground plus six upper floors and a penthouse collapsed at Anjaih Nagar in Gachibowli on August 22, 2026, resulting in the death of two people and causing damage to an adjoining building.
As a result, the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation has suspended the Town Planning Building Official responsible for the area, citing failure to stop the unauthorized construction.
The structure was located at H.No.1-60/113/135/1 in Anjaih Nagar, Gachibowli. It collapsed on Saturday, resulting in two fatalities. In an order dated August 22, 2026, CMC stated that the building was constructed without required permissions. Furthermore, they said U. Santosh Kumar, the Town Planning Building Officer, failed to prevent the unauthorized construction, leading to loss of life and endangering public safety.
The order stated that the officer will face disciplinary proceedings. After reviewing the facts, the CMC Commissioner decided to suspend him with immediate effect. Consequently, he will remain under suspension until completion of the departmental inquiry, in line with Telangana Civil Services rules.
Hyderabad to enforce one-way traffic around KBR Park
During the suspension period, the officer must remain within the local jurisdiction and cannot leave without prior approval. He will receive a subsistence allowance during this time. Additionally, the order has been forwarded to the Director of Town and Country Planning, Government of Telangana, for ratification.
The collapse has raised questions about how building regulations are enforced in Gachibowli. As a result, residents and activists are demanding a thorough investigation into how unauthorized construction was allowed to proceed. They are calling for stricter enforcement of building codes to prevent similar incidents in the future. Meanwhile, the police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
