GHMC launches QR-based e-waste reward system

GHMC launches QR-based e-waste reward system

HyderabadMail.com 0 months ago

HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has launched a QR code-based initiative to promote e-waste recycling and reduce environmental impact.

Users earn reward points through QR system

Under the programme, residents can dispose of non-functional mobile phones by dropping them in designated boxes at mobile shops. Users must scan a QR code and submit details to receive reward points.

Officials said the system will be launched on Thursday. The initiative has been introduced in partnership with recycling and e-waste collection agencies.

30 drop boxes installed across city locations

In the first phase, GHMC has installed drop boxes at 30 mobile shops across the city. Residents can deposit old or unused phones and scan the QR code to register their submission.

Doorstep pickup for large electronic items

For bulky electronic waste such as televisions and refrigerators, residents can request doorstep collection. After scanning the QR code and entering address and item details, agencies including Earth Sense, Recytronics, Pure Earth, Z Enviro and Green Enviro will collect the items.

Officials said the reward points can be used to purchase products made by self-help groups and voluntary organisations. Currently, redemption is available at self-help group centres.

They added that, in future, the points can also be used for discounts on electronic goods and other benefits.

Scheme introduced after limited response to earlier drive

Earlier this year, GHMC conducted a citywide e-waste collection drive and set up collection centres. However, only about 100 tonnes of waste was collected.

Officials said residents were reluctant to give away old items for free, as they could sell them for cash. The QR-based reward system was introduced to address this concern and improve participation.
