Jawahar Nagar waste site puts 20 lakh residents at risk, JAC tells KTR

HYDERABAD: A delegation from the Joint Action Committee (JAC), representing the Jawahar Nagar dump yard area, met with Bharat Rashtra Samithi(BRS) Working President Kalvakuntla Taraka Rama Rao (KTR) to report the ongoing environmental and health crisis at one of India's most hazardous waste sites.

The JAC team reported that unscientific practices at the 339-acre dump yard, operated by the Ramky company, put nearly two million people at risk. They said the site has been filled with waste without proper segregation or bio-mining, causing significant soil, air, and water pollution.

Furthermore, the delegation told KTR that the Jawahar Nagar dump yard emits 5.9 tons of methane gas per hour, ranking fourth globally among waste mounds and first in India for unscientific waste management. Leachate from the site has also contaminated local water bodies, worsening public health.

Given these facts, the JAC stated, "Depriving citizens of their fundamental right to life constitutes an unpardonable crime," and called for immediate action and the prompt establishment of new, scientifically managed dump yards.

Additionally, the JAC team told KTR they had previously met with the Chief Minister to convey the situation. The Chief Minister responded that a decision on new dump yards would be made through all-party consensus, ensuring no party opposes the move. He affirmed that these new facilities would use modern technology.

In response, KTR acknowledged the critical condition of the Jawahar Nagar dump yard and agreed that further waste disposal there is not feasible. He assured the delegation of his support and pledged to write to the Chief Minister about the issue.

The JAC also requested an immediate end to transporting all waste generated within GHMC limits to a single dump yard.

Specifically, the JAC presented several demands to KTR: immediate segregation and bio-mining of accumulated waste to restore the site, permanent closure of the Jawahar Nagar dump yard, free medical care and potable water for affected residents, and the establishment of new, scientifically managed dumping yards across the state to prevent similar issues elsewhere.

Meanwhile, the JAC has also requested a meeting with the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), to discuss the ongoing pollution and health crisis. The meeting is scheduled for tomorrow at 10:00 AM.

During the meeting with KTR, JAC members including Dr. B. Shankar Narayana, Enugu Sanjeeva Reddy, M. Sammireddy, G. Swarna, and former Chairperson Praneetha Srikanth presented the case.

The JAC reiterated that unscientific management at Jawahar Nagar is a serious violation of citizens' fundamental rights and urged immediate, decisive action to prevent further harm.
