Nagulapally-Kokapet MMTS extension proposed

Nagulapally-Kokapet MMTS extension proposed

HYDERABAD: Passenger associations have proposed extending the Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) rail network from Nagulapally to Kokapet through the Outer Ring Road corridor to improve public transport access in the city's western suburbs.

With construction activity expanding rapidly in western Hyderabad, the demand for affordable public transport has increased due to the movement of migrant workers, employees and daily commuters. Passenger groups said extending MMTS services in the corridor would benefit a larger section of commuters.

Expansion planned along western growth corridor

The proposed extension is expected to benefit daily travellers from Vikarabad, Ghatkesar, Kollur, Tellapur, Nagulapally and other peripheral areas of Hyderabad.

Nagulapally already has a railway station connected to the Vikarabad line, where passenger trains are operating. Passenger associations said MMTS services could also be extended on this route as the station is located close to the Outer Ring Road.

Kokapet, however, does not have a railway line. The nearest railway stations are Lingampally and Tellapur. Proposals are already under consideration to extend the Hyderabad Metro Rail from Raidurg to Kokapet, and the Detailed Project Report has been submitted to the Centre for approval.

New track may improve worker mobility

Passenger associations said an MMTS link between Nagulapally and Kokapet would provide additional connectivity benefits if developed alongside the proposed metro extension.

At present, most MMTS services operate up to Lingampally, while a few trains run till Tellapur. Nagulapally railway station is located about 6 km further from Tellapur.

Thousands of 2BHK housing units have come up near the Outer Ring Road service road in the area. Construction activity is also increasing in Vattinagulapally and Neopolis near Kokapet.

Passenger groups proposed laying around 12 km of MMTS track connecting these areas. They said the extension would benefit construction workers, plumbers, electricians, housekeeping staff and other employees who travel daily along the corridor.

They added that improved rail connectivity could also create additional employment opportunities in the western suburbs of Hyderabad.
