HYDERABAD: Andhra all-rounder Nitish Reddy has strengthened his place in India's long-term plans after winning the confidence of the senior selection committee.
The selectors believe the 22-year-old can eventually shoulder responsibilities similar to star all-rounder Hardik Pandya across formats.
Bowling speed rises as selectors back Nitish
Nitish, who recently earned national attention with his performances in the Indian Premier League and the Australia tour, has now been picked in India's squads for the Afghanistan Test and One Day International series. His growing consistency with both bat and ball has impressed the selectors.
India chief selector Ajit Agarkar said Nitish's bowling had shown "significant improvement" in recent months. "If we look ahead to the ODI World Cup plans, he is an important member of our squad," Agarkar said.

Nitish earlier operated at speeds around 120 kmph, but he is now consistently bowling between 130 and 140 kmph. Coaches and analysts believe the added pace, along with improved accuracy, has made him a strong backup option to Hardik Pandya.
Training methods bring visible improvement
People close to the player said Nitish has intensified his bowling workload in recent months. His training reportedly includes sessions with heavy and light balls to improve pace and rhythm.
Former India pacer Varun Aaron and pace bowling coach Arthur Jones have also worked closely on improving Nitish's run-up, release and bowling intensity. Coaches said the all-rounder's body structure and athletic ability allow him to generate additional pace naturally.
Jones said Nitish had previously bowled without enough aggression but had transformed his methods through sustained training. "The focus is now on delivering every ball with full intensity and improving speed without losing control," he said.
Strong numbers across formats
Nitish has already represented India in all three formats. In 18 international matches, he has scored 588 runs and taken 11 wickets. He has also become a key player for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League this season, scoring 235 runs and claiming seven wickets.
Cricket analysts believe Nitish can serve Indian cricket for a long period if he continues improving his bowling while maintaining his batting consistency.
