Police warn public against fake e-challan links in SMS, WhatsApp

HyderabadMail.com 3 weeks ago

HYDERABAD: Cyber criminals are circulating fake e-challan messages through WhatsApp, SMS and email, falsely claiming that a traffic violation has been recorded and asking recipients to pay a fine immediately.

Authorities warned that such messages often contain suspicious links or mobile application files, including APK files titled "RTO Challan.apk". Victims are asked to click the link or download the file to check alleged challan details.

Officials said these files may contain malware capable of stealing bank details, one-time passwords (OTPs), personal data and money from users' accounts.

Fraud messages use malicious links and fake challan notices

Cyber criminals use these fake messages to trick people into entering sensitive information such as bank account numbers, debit or credit card details and OTPs.

Once victims provide the information, fraudsters can access their financial accounts and steal money or other personal data, authorities said.

Officials advised the public not to click on unknown links or download files received through unsolicited messages claiming to be e-challans.

Verify challans only through official government portals

Authorities said citizens should always verify traffic challans through official government websites before making any payment.

They also warned the public not to share OTPs, bank details or card information with anyone.

People receiving suspicious messages have been asked to check the website address carefully and avoid making payments through unofficial links.

Victims who receive such fraudulent messages or lose money have been advised to immediately call the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or file a complaint on the official portal www.cybercrime.gov.in.
