Ishant Sharma was born on September 2, 1988, in Delhi, India, into a middle-class Brahmin family. His dad, Vijay, worked as an air-conditioning repairman, while his mom, Grisha, stayed at home. He also has an older sister named Eva.

Ishant went to Ganga International School in Delhi for his early education. He discovered his love for cricket when he was around 14 years old and started playing seriously. Even though his family didn't have a background in cricket, they fully supported his dreams. To help him practice, his dad even made a makeshift cricket pitch in their yard by leveling off a patch of land. This encouragement helped set him on the path to becoming a professional cricketer.

Sharma left his studies after class 10th and started focusing on only Cricket. Ishant toured England with the India U-19s in 2006 and Pakistan in 2006-07. He played three youth tests and six youth One Day Internationals for India.

In domestic cricket, he plays for Delhi. In 154 first-class games, Ishant has picked up 486 wickets, at an average of 28.54.

On the fourth day of the third Test match at Perth, he bowled an exceptional spell to Australian captain Ricky Ponting that resulted in his wicket and helped India claim victory.

On 10 February 2008, Sharma bagged four important wickets in the 4th ODI of the CB Series against Australia. He ended the match with figures of 4/38 and was named Man of the Match. During the 2008 Test series against Australia in India, Ishant was the leading wicket-taker, with 16, and was named man-of-the-series as India won 2-0.

He thereby became the first Indian fast bowler to win such an award in a Test series on Indian soil after Kapil Dev, who won the award in 1983.
