07 April 2026, US: Syngenta has announced the global launch of VIRESTINA™, a selective herbicide developed to control resistant grass weeds in soybean and cotton.
The active ingredient in the herbicide is metproxybicyclone. Argentina is the first country to grant registration approval, with plans to introduce the product in Brazil, Australia, the United States and Canada.
Resistant weeds continue to affect crop production by surviving herbicide applications and competing with crops for nutrients, water and sunlight. These weeds also act as hosts for pests and diseases. Herbicide resistance has been reported in multiple countries and across many crop systems, with grass weeds forming a significant share of affected species.
VIRESTINA™ is designed to control grass weeds that are resistant to herbicides such as glyphosate and clethodim. It can be applied over crops like soybean and cotton. The herbicide breaks down in soil and supports crop rotation and cover crop planning. It also reduces the need for repeated field operations.
The product was developed at Syngenta's research facility in the United Kingdom using predictive science approaches. The development timeline was completed in about 10 years.
"At Syngenta, our innovations have an important role in enabling growers to address some of the biggest challenges they face," said Ioana Tudor. "VIRESTINA™ demonstrates Syngenta's ability to foresee a challenge a decade earlier, to accelerate our research and development timeline and successfully deliver an innovation that is timely in meeting growers' needs. We are very proud of our industry-leading innovation pipeline."
Syngenta stated that its research pipeline includes multiple crop protection and biological products planned for launch over the next decade. Its portfolio includes solutions for nematode control, insect management and fungal disease control, along with biological and digital agriculture tools.
