New Delhi: The United States has issued a clarification following a controversy sparked by a social media repost linked to President Donald Trump, which referred to India and other countries in a negative context calling them ' hellholes'.
The US Embassy in New Delhi stated that Trump holds India in high regard, describing it as a "great country" and emphasising his personal rapport with India's leadership.
The clarification comes after Trump reposted comments by US radio host Michael Savage, which referred to India, China and other nations as "hellholes". The remarks drew criticism and raised diplomatic concerns in India.
According to the embassy spokesperson, Trump has consistently expressed positive views about India, although the statement did not specify when those remarks were made. The message was framed as reflecting his broader position on bilateral relations.
The original comments by Savage were made in the context of a US Supreme Court case related to birthright citizenship and were later amplified through Trump's repost on social media.
In New Delhi, officials responded cautiously to the development. The Ministry of External Affairs said it had seen the reports but declined to elaborate further on the matter.
The episode has briefly stirred diplomatic attention, but both sides appear to be working to prevent escalation and maintain stable bilateral ties.
