Thiruvananthapuram: The Communist Party of India (CPI), the second largest ally of the ruling LDF Government, has officially announced its candidates for 25 constituencies for the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections, scheduled for 9th April 2026.
The announcement followed the Election Commission's declaration of the poll schedule. Polling will take place on April 9, with the counting of votes set for May 4, 2026.
Key highlights and strategic shifts
In a notable move, the party granted an exemption from the "two-term rule" to Minister K Rajan, allowing him to contest again. Three other sitting ministers will also defend their current seats.
High-profile battles: Sitting Kaipamangalam MLA E T Tyson has been fielded in Paravur to challenge the Leader of the Opposition, V D Satheesan.

Literary entry
In Thrissur, sitting MLA P Balachandran has been replaced by renowned poet and Yuvakala Sahithi state president Alankode Leelakrishnan.
Changes and fresh faces
Eight sitting MLAs, including Deputy Speaker Chittayam Gopakumar, have been opted out this time. Other prominent names stepping down include E Chandrasekharan, E K Vijayan and C K Asha.
To maintain female representation after C K Asha stepped down from Vaikom, the party is fielding P Vasantham in Nadapuram.
In addition, M Mustafa will contest from Manjeri as a CPI-independent candidate.
