1,750 Crore For NTR Statue In Amaravati, Many Problems!

The Chandrababu Naidu Government is planning a massive NTR statue in Amaravati on the lines of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Statue in Gujarat.

The proposal aims to create a major tourism landmark for Andhra Pradesh.

A cabinet sub committee recently met to discuss the statue project. After the meeting, Minister Narayana shared key details with the media, calling it an initial discussion with officials presenting the broad plan to ministers.

Narayana said the statue will cost 1,750 Crores and will have a bronze skin weighing 3,500 metric tonnes. The total structure will weigh around 65,000 metric tonnes and stand about 182 feet tall.

He explained that visitors will be able to go up to 160 feet using lifts and view the entire city from the top. According to him, this was the first formal meeting focused solely on the statue proposal.

The idea of boosting tourism through a massive statue, similar to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Statue in Gujarat, appears attractive. However, it is also likely to invite strong political criticism against the Government.

NTR is widely regarded as an icon of Telugu culture and identity. At the same time, Andhra Pradesh society remains deeply caste driven, which could allow the Opposition to exploit the statue issue to create insecurity among other communities.

There is also an Opposition known for changing names and destroying statues after coming to power. They previously attempted to dismantle a capital project and may not hesitate to target a statue as well.

Spending 1,750 Crores on a statue when several works in Amaravati are still pending could trigger avoidable controversy. The timing of the project raises questions about priorities and public perception.

The Telugu Desam Party Government often struggles to clearly explain its intentions. This weakness allows the Opposition to set the narrative and corner the Government on sensitive issues.

A clear cost benefit explanation from a tourism perspective is essential. Even then, the risk of caste based provocation in the name of NT Ramarao cannot be ignored.

The Government must carefully assess whether the project is worth the political and social cost. If it proceeds, it should ideally begin only after visible progress in Amaravati construction works.

Otherwise, convincing people about spending 1,750 Crores on a statue may prove extremely difficult.
