After GHMC Wards, 5 New Districts In Telangana?

After increasing GHMC wards from 150 to 300, the Telangana government is now considering district reorganisation. The move follows growing public demand across the state.

The government believes the current structure is causing administrative difficulties.

Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy announced this in the Assembly. He said the earlier district division done by the BRS government was unscientific. According to him, citizens are facing several issues due to poor planning.

The Minister pointed out that mandals from the same constituency fall under different districts. This, he said, is creating hurdles in administration and welfare delivery. He blamed the previous BRS government for prioritising numbers over practicality.

He further said there is a clear mismatch between revenue divisions and mandals. The earlier government divided districts based on personal decisions. The present government now plans to correct these structural gaps through reorganisation.

The reorganisation will be based on geography and public convenience. Villages far from mandal headquarters but closer to other mandals will be shifted. New revenue divisions will also be created wherever required.

In the past, KCR increased districts from 10 to 36. In Andhra Pradesh, Jagan expanded districts from 13 to 26. Later, Chandrababu raised the count to 28.

Recently, the Telangana government expanded GHMC zones from 6 to 12. Circles were increased from 30 to 60 and wards from 150 to 300. This made GHMC the largest municipal corporation in the country.

The Minister said there is strong demand for new districts from Khammam, Adilabad, and Mahbubnagar. The government is considering creating four to five new districts to address this demand.

Ponguleti said a detailed report will be prepared after discussions with the Chief Minister. The report will be placed before the Assembly. Views of legislators will be taken before the final decision.

He concluded that decentralisation of power is the core goal of the exercise. The final call will be taken after consultations with the Chief Minister and detailed Assembly discussions.
