Assembly Boycott: What Are The Past Precedents?

Finance Minister Payyavula Keshav tabled the first Budget of this Government in the Assembly today.

YSR Congress had decided to boycott the Assembly for the remainder of this term and so, there is no opposition in the house.

YSRCP did not get the numbers that would make the party it the Principal Opposition in the Assembly. Jagan says there is no other opposition party in the house and he should be given the Cabinet Rank Opposition Leader automatically despite not having the numbers.

When it did not happen, he boycotted the house.

1.7% Insignificant, 11 Seats Key: Jagan?

The question now is whether boycotting the Assembly is justified for not having the Principal Opposition Status.

Historically, parties never boycotted the house because they do not have this Opposition Status.

Jagan Is 'Reverse Candidate Reddy'

In 1994, Congress got just 26 seats in the Erstwhile Andhra Pradesh due to NT Ramarao's wave. It fell short of the Opposition Status but did not boycott the Assembly.

From 2014 to 2024, there was no Opposition Party at the National level.

In 2014, Congress only got 44 seats, and 52 seats in 2019. However, the party did not push for the Opposition Status and did not boycott the Assembly.

In Telangana, KCR ensured that Congress didn't have the status of the principal opposition from 2014 to 2023 through party mergers, but Congress never boycotted the assembly.

There is not even a single precedent in history that the Opposition boycotted the Assembly just because it had no numbers to become the Principal Opposition.

But then, strange are the ways of Jagan Mohan Reddy. Egos take centerstage more than anything else.

Regardless of the reason Jagan gives for the boycott, people will think he is either too drunk on power or ashamed to attend the assembly as the opposition leader, neglecting his basic responsibility.

It seems YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is genuinely afraid to face Chandrababu.
