Coolie was anticipated to be the first-ever 1000-crore grosser from the Tamil film industry. At the same time, War 2 was expected to be Bollywood's first true pan-India blockbuster with two huge superstars from North and South.
But with both films now locking horns on August 14, these dreams might just remain dreams. Instead of maximizing their individual potential, this clash could severely dent both films' box office prospects.
Allu Arjun Trying Untouched Magic?
War 2, featuring Hrithik Roshan and NTR, is a big-budget action spectacle aimed at dominating North India and Telugu states.
Meanwhile, Coolie brings its own firepower - Rajinikanth, who delivered a 600-crore blockbuster with Jailer without Hindi support, is joined by Aamir Khan for Hindi audiences, Nagarjuna for the Telugu belt, and Upendra for Kannada markets.
Suriya's Big Comeback: Can Content Match the Hype?
And with Lokesh Kanagaraj at the helm, whose recent films have worked across regions, Coolie has been crafted as a true multilingual entertainer.
Although Rajinikanth movies don't usually threaten NTR in Telugu states, Coolie might be different. Lokesh's rising brand and the diverse star cast could give the film a strong opening even outside Tamil Nadu.
Yash to Lokesh: South Declares War on Bollywood
Similarly, War 2 is the most anticipated movie just because of the fact that it brings Hrithik and NTR together. Both movies are targeting pan-India success and eyeing the 1000-crore club - but this clash could shrink their potential by at least 25-30%, even with positive word of mouth.
Trade analysts believe Coolie will dominate in Tamil Nadu and parts of the South, mainly driven by Lokesh's directorial pull rather than just Rajinikanth's name. On the flip side, War 2 is counting on NTR's regional appeal and Hrithik's fanbase in the North.
However, Lokesh's post-Vikram and Leo reach might help Coolie gain solid ground even in Hindi markets. Though some fans argue that Tamil and Hindi films don't clash because of language barriers, history has shown that strong content travels well.
If either of these films clicks universally, it could shake the other's performance - and that's what makes this clash so risky.
