The BCCI recently met with IPL team owners to talk about the future of the tournament. One big topic was the possible return of a rule for the IPL 2025 season.

This rule would let players who retired from international cricket at least five years ago be classified as 'uncapped' players. This means they would not count against the team's budget in the same way as other players.

For example, if the rule returns, MS Dhoni could be considered an uncapped player because he retired from international cricket in August 2020. By the time IPL 2025 starts, he will have been retired for five years. This rule used to be in place from 2008 to 2021 but was removed in 2021.

If the rule comes back, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) could keep Dhoni at a much lower cost-Rs 4 crore instead of the Rs 12 crore they paid in 2022. This would help CSK save money and keep their team strong.

Dhoni, who handed over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad, has said he will decide about his future after the official rules are announced.

CSK's CEO, Kasi Viswanathan, clarified that the team did not specifically ask for this rule to be brought back for Dhoni. The BCCI only mentioned the possibility of reintroducing the rule.
