Highest Grossing Franchise Movies of Indian Cinema

Franchises are not new to the Indian film industry. While many people believe that Rajkumar Hirani's Munnabhai series was the first to start the trend, it has been going on for decades.

Years ago, it was the silent film Hunterwali, which had a sequel. However, it did not continue after the second installment.

But with time, the approach to franchises has changed. New characters are introduced in a follow-up. Sudden crossovers happen between two different films that belong to the same genre, which later brings all the actors together in one film.

As of today, franchises have managed to bring good box office collections, despite a few installments bombing in the end. Let's have a look at them.

1) YRF Spy Universe

The formation of this franchise was unplanned. In 2012, Ek Tha Tiger marked the entry of Salman Khan in Yash Raj Films. The collaboration did not stop, and we got a sequel, which earned more bucks at the box office.

A third film was in discussion when War arrived seven years later with Hrithik Roshan. The producers were already planning a big comeback for Shah Rukh Khan with Pathaan. But all these characters had one thing in common. They were individuals working to protect the country. This led to a Universe of such people, which has collected Rs. 3,195 crores so far.

2) Baahubali

We have seen many directors who opt to keep themselves away from a sequel. But S.S. Rajamouli did not have an option this time. The story of a child separated from his kingdom and the fight to reclaim his position by confronting an evil king was impossible to be covered in less than three hours.

The first entry was a big blockbuster. There were hardly any boring moments, and single-screen audiences were clapping and whistling. The response was similar to the second installment. The overall collections were Rs. 2,410 crores. Along with an animated entry, Rajamouli has confirmed a third part. But considering his filmmaking style, the wait will be longer than expected.

3) Pushpa

It is possible that Sukumar was planning one film. But a small glimpse that came out right after the lockdown might have made the director rethink his decision, leading to a sequel. Allu Arjun completely changed himself this time. The fans also gave him a new title - Icon Star.

While it has been a long time since the films were released, the public has continued recalling the one-liners and other moments. The concept of sandalwood smuggling and the lead hero's clash with his rivals resulted in an overall figure of Rs. 2,002 crores. A third installment has already been announced. However, fans have to be patient for official updates.

4) K.G.F.

With fictional action films getting recognition, Hombale Films decided to take a different approach. The story was set in the real-life Kolar Gold Fields. But the characters and situations were fictional, with everyone trying to take possession of the mining region.

But audiences were more interested in watching Rocking Star Yash beating up the villains with a cigarette in his mouth all the time. The formula worked, with the sequel recording better box office numbers than the first, leading to overall collections of Rs. 1,450 crores. A third film is being discussed. But it won't happen suddenly unless everyone is confident with the plot and vision.

5) MHCU

This is possibly the only franchise that was formed without considering anything, including how the installments would perform at the box office. The success of Stree was enough for Dinesh Vijan and Maddock Films to collaborate and present the genre of horror-comedy with a lot of entertainment.

Although Bhediya did not do so well, the blockbuster tag for Stree 2 and a hit for Munjya led to an announcement of eight more entries. Seven installments are now scheduled to arrive soon in theatres. After a woman and a child's spirit, a headless ghost, and some vampires, audiences are waiting to see the next creature to join this franchise, which has collected Rs. 1,430 crores.

6) Cop Universe

With a successful franchise like Golmaal in his credits, Rohit Shetty was not planning to build another universe so soon. However, the dialogues of Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn) and Jaikant Shikre (Prakash Raj) became a topic of discussion on social media for different reasons.

Then came Simmba. Ranveer Singh as a cop for the first time. With sky-high expectations, the response was outstanding. This eventually led to the creation of a universe full of police officers. Sooryavanshi was a blockbuster. Chulbul Pandey (Salman Khan) has also entered now with Singham Again. The total box office figures have been Rs. 1,410 crores.

7) Kantara

A commercial film with local traditional concepts being added to the main storyline. The formula might not work for every filmmaker. But Rishab Shetty was confident, and he brought the film without a second thought to the big screen.

The recovery was 100 times more than the budget. The sequel that came out this year also received a better response. One thing was common in both. The climax, which had a lot of intensity and a brilliant performance by Rishab. A third entry is on the way. A release date remains unknown. But the combined collections have been Rs. 1,216 crores.

8) LCU

The story behind Lokesh Cinematic Universe is also similar to MHCU. With Kaithi, Lokesh Kanagaraj was confident that things won't go wrong. It took some time for him to bring the second entry, Vikram, which marked the return of Kamal Haasan and was a blockbuster. This was followed by Thalapathy Vijay's Leo.

Gangsters, drugs, and the war between several groups were common in all the installments. The commercial treatment of the main subject impressed everyone. With three successful films, the total collections have been Rs. 1,100 crores.

9) Housefull

Comedy is the toughest thing for any actor or filmmaker. The punchlines need to hit the audience and make them laugh out loud. There was no one better than Sajid Khan to handle it. The first two entries created history at the box office. Despite Khan being replaced, the third installment also did decent business.

But the graph went down with the fourth. It became worse with the fifth. The latter was also the first entry to become a flop in terms of box office numbers. However, the franchise's popularity has still helped it to accumulate Rs. 1,030 crores until now.

10) Enthiran

After bringing the theme of corruption in different forms, S. Shankar decided to take it to a whole new level with robots. A genius machine created by a scientist is used by his rivals for their benefit. The machine returns in the sequel to face a new enemy in the form of Pakshi Rajan, an ornithologist-turned-humanoid, who targets human beings for the deaths of birds.

The concepts were fresh. It was something that the Indian viewers had never witnessed on the big screen. They went inside the theatres in large numbers. The overall numbers combining both entries were Rs. 900 crores. Unfortunately, Shankar has not planned another installment yet.

Although the collections are outstanding, all the franchises cannot be expected to do well in terms of the upcoming installments. The situation for a few of them has turned out to be worse. War 2 was a big flop despite creating hype before release. The same can be said for Housefull 5 and Singham Again, with collections not being better compared to the previous entries.

As of now, Maddock Horror Comedy Universe is on top. Since Thamma was not a big blockbuster, the makers can now focus on investing less without taking the star fees into consideration, leading to more successful entries in the future. Let's wait and see what will happen with the planned entries of all the franchises.
