Investigations began when Raja's body was discovered after the couple went missing during a trek. A local guide, who had earlier seen the couple with three unknown men, provided crucial testimony that helped police track the suspects.

Sonam was later found over 1000 kilometres away in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, crying at a roadside dhaba. She used a stranger's phone to call home, leading to her arrest.

Police allege that Sonam planned the murder with Raj Kushwaha, believed to be her lover and the mastermind.
