Panchayat Elections: Every Party Searching For Positives!

All three phases of the Panchayat Elections are complete. Out of 12,733 Panchayats, Congress won 7010 seats, BRS secured 3502, BJP won 688, and others took 1505. This gives Congress a clear numerical edge statewide.

Congress has won 56 percent of the total seats. Except for Siddipet, the party holds a majority across the remaining thirty districts. This outcome has drawn attention to district level consolidation rather than isolated local wins.

Siddipet district includes the constituencies of KCR from Gajwel, Harish Rao from Siddipet, and KTR from Siricilla. It remained the only district where Congress did not secure a majority.

Many argue that Panchayat Elections, held without party symbols and three years before Assembly polls, offer limited political meaning. Still, they provide a broad indication of public mood, which explains why all major parties are claiming moral victories.

In 2019, the then ruling BRS won 7774 Panchayats, while Congress managed only 2709. Supporters of BRS say Congress still trails their earlier dominance and predict further decline in the coming years.

Congress counters this by pointing to its dominance in thirty districts. At the constituency level, the party has full control in its 64 sitting seats. It also secured majorities in eight BRS seats and four BJP seats.

Amid these claims, BJP finished a distant third, similar to its Assembly performance. However, party leaders highlight that over 700 sarpanches backed by BJP won this time, compared to around 100 earlier.

With Panchayat Elections concluded, the Finance Commission is expected to release funds to these bodies. This will ease pressure on the government. Parishad and municipal elections, however, are likely to be delayed further.
