A major development has emerged in Telangana politics with the Supreme Court issuing notices to Telangana Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar in the MLAs defection case.
The petition was filed by TBJP MLA Alleti Maheswar Reddy, who alleged that the Speaker defied an earlier Supreme Court ruling. He challenged the decision to give a clean chit to 7 of the 10 defecting MLAs.
The matter came up for hearing on Monday. The Apex Court issued notices and asked the jury headed by Sanjay Karol to respond on the issue.
The court also clubbed the petition filed by BRS working president KTR with Alleti's plea. The next hearing has been postponed to February 6.
Telangana Speaker Gaddam Prasad Rao had earlier dismissed the disqualification petitions against 7 MLAs. The decision was based on what was cited as a lack of sufficient proof.
The BRS alleged that the MLAs had defected to the ruling Congress. After the dismissal, BRS decided to approach the Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, MLAs such as Danam Nagender and Kadiyam Srihari have maintained that they continue to be with the Congress.
Political observers believe the disqualification was rejected due to the ruling party's concern over possible by-elections in the constituencies of the 10 MLAs.
The final outcome for the 10 MLAs now rests with the Supreme Court. The court's next decision is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the political landscape in Telangana.
