Top Opening Days: Dhurandhar 2 Beats SRK's Biggest

Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge has taken a thunderous start at the Indian box office, rewriting opening day records in spectacular fashion.

According to trade websites, the film collected approximately Rs.75 crore net on its first day (Thursday) in India, setting a new benchmark for Hindi cinema. This figure does not include the paid previews held on Wednesday evening, which alone contributed another Rs.40 crores net. Combined, the film's total for day one plus previews stands at a staggering Rs.115 crore net. The worldwide gross stands around 185 crores.

With this, Dhurandhar: The Revenge has officially recorded the biggest opening day in Bollywood history, surpassing the previous record held by Jawan, which had earned Rs.65 crores.

However, these numbers have sparked some discussion among fans. Traditionally, Bollywood has treated preview collections separately from opening day figures. But with increasing competition from South Indian films, especially Telugu releases that include benefit shows and previews in day-one totals, there is now a shift toward combining these numbers for a bigger headline figure. This is why the Rs.115 crore combined total is also being highlighted alongside the standalone Rs.75 crore opening.

At the same time, some trade experts question whether this method gives a completely fair comparison. Previews essentially add extra shows before the actual opening day, which can inflate the overall number. In this case, the film had around 11,000 shows on Wednesday and nearly 21,000 shows on Thursday, totaling over 32,000 shows. This effectively makes it closer to one and a half days of business rather than a single day.

Here are the Top 10 all-time Hindi opening days (net collections):

Dhurandhar: The Revenge - Rs.73.00 cr
Jawan - Rs.65 cr
Pathaan - Rs.56 cr
Stree 2 - Rs.53 cr
Animal - Rs.51 cr
War - Rs.50.75 cr
Thugs of Hindostan - Rs.48 cr
Bharat - Rs.41 cr
Tiger 3 - Rs.40.75 cr
Singham Again - Rs.40 cr

Looking ahead, this trend of including previews in opening day figures may become more common, especially for big-ticket releases. For now, Dhurandhar 2 has firmly established itself at the top, setting a new benchmark that future films will aim to surpass.

Aditya Dhar is on an unbelievable winning streak with Uri: The Surgical Strike, Dhurandhar, and now Dhurandhar 2. All three films have turned out to be massive blockbusters, which is something rarely seen in Indian cinema. Even legends like Raj Kapoor or Subhash Ghai did not start their careers with three consecutive mega hits. Aditya Dhar's strength lies in mixing strong storytelling with mass appeal. With this rare hat-trick, he has clearly established himself as one of the top 3 directors in the country today.
