Thalapathy Vijay is set to face his first election later this year in Tamil Nadu. As the polls approach, the actor turned politician is facing a series of unexpected challenges.
Ahead of the elections, Vijay's last film Jana Nayakan was forced to postpone its Pongal release. The delay occurred due to a hold-up in censor certification, which triggered criticism and speculation.
On the same day, Vijay was asked to appear before the Central Bureau of Investigation in connection with the Karur Stampede issue. The incident reportedly resulted in 39 deaths and left more than 80 people injured.
The agency is questioning Vijay over alleged lapses in the rally that led to the tragic stampede. This move has raised eyebrows, as party presidents are rarely summoned directly for such matters.
It is being noted that in both the Jana Nayakan postponement and the CBI inquiry, central agencies are involved. This has led to speculation among sections of the public that the Bharatiya Janata Party may be behind the pressure.
While the stampede incident brought criticism for Vijay and his party, the manner in which events unfolded has become a talking point in Tamil Nadu. Many feel the actions appear excessive ahead of a crucial election.
Usually, organisers or officials are questioned for lapses in public meetings. The decision to summon a party president has led to accusations of vendetta politics.
This raises the question of motive. Why would the BJP allegedly target Vijay at this stage?
One theory suggests pressure to push Vijay into an alliance. If Vijay's TVK Party joins hands with the BJP and AIADMK, it could pose a strong challenge to the ruling DMK.
Vijay, however, has been firm about contesting the election alone. Observers believe this pressure could be aimed at forcing a rethink on alliances.
Another theory suggests that the BJP may be indirectly helping Vijay grow. If he weakens both Dravidian parties, they may believe he can be controlled later.
Among these, the alliance pressure theory appears more plausible to many. The BJP is seen as cautious about allowing another strong regional party to rise in the South.
It remains to be seen whether Vijay will stand his ground amid growing pressure. The Tamil Nadu Assembly elections are expected this summer, with the current Assembly term ending on May 10, 2026.
The Election Commission must complete the process and ensure a new government is formed before that deadline.
