PratidinTime 1 week ago

In a first-of-its-kind move for the Assam Assembly Election 2026, voters in Assam will be provided with a mobile phone deposit facility outside polling stations on April 9. The initiative, introduced by the Election Commission of India, aims to ensure smooth, secure, and disruption-free voting.

New Mobile Phone Rules for Assam Assembly Election 2026

As part of the updated polling guidelines:

  • Mobile phones are allowed only within a 100-metre radius of polling stations

  • Devices must remain switched off within this zone

  • Voters must deposit phones at designated counters before entering

  • A token system will be used for collection after voting

Voters can retrieve their devices after casting their vote, but must ensure phones remain switched off until they exit the restricted area.

First-Time Initiative Under ECI’s AMF Framework

This mobile deposit system is being introduced during the Assam Assembly Election 2026 under the Assured Minimum Facilities (AMF) guidelines.

The Election Commission of India had earlier directed all states to upgrade polling infrastructure to enhance voter convenience and maintain electoral integrity.

Polling Infrastructure in Assam

For the upcoming elections:

  • Assam will have 41,320 Ballot Units, 43,975 Control Units, and 43,997 VVPATs

  • Nationwide, over 2.18 lakh polling stations are being aligned with AMF standards

These upgrades aim to create a consistent and voter-friendly experience across the country.

Key Facilities at Polling Stations

During the Assam Assembly Election 2026, all polling stations will include:

  • Drinking water facilities

  • Shaded waiting areas

  • Toilets with water access

  • Proper lighting arrangements

  • Ramps for Persons with Disabilities (PwD)

  • Standard voting compartments

  • Clear signage for navigation

Benches will also be placed at intervals in queues to improve voter comfort.

Voter Assistance and Information Support

Voter Facilitation Posters (VFPs)

Each polling station will display four key posters providing:

  • Polling station details

  • Candidate list

  • Voting guidelines

  • Accepted ID documents

  • Step-by-step voting process

Voter Assistance Booths (VABs)

Staffed by Booth Level Officers, these booths will help voters:

  • Identify their polling booth

  • Locate their name in the electoral roll

  • Get assistance with voting-related queries

Ensuring Smooth and Fair Elections

With the introduction of mobile deposit counters and improved facilities, the Assam Assembly Election 2026 is set to offer a more streamlined and voter-centric experience.

The Election Commission of India aims to minimise disruptions, enhance transparency, and ensure that every voter in Assam can cast their vote conveniently and securely.
