Assam Floods: Jorabat on Edge Amid Landslide Risk

Assam Floods: Jorabat on Edge Amid Landslide Risk

PratidinTime 1 month ago

Assam:A loomingdisaster continues to unfold in the Jorabat area, where a long-standing artificial flood crisis has now escalated into a serious threat of landslides.

The situation has become increasingly alarming, with locals warning that a major landslide could strike the region at any moment, especially during the ongoing monsoon season.

Just two days ago, severe artificial flooding in Jorabat disrupted movement and caused significant hardship to hundreds of commuters travelling between upper and lower Assam.

Despite the persistence of the issue over the years, residents allege that there has been no concrete intervention from the authorities.

However, the matter did gain attention recently during the Assam Assembly’s budget session, when newly elected MLA Dr Tapan Das raised the issue, urging the government to take immediate and effective action.

Adding to the growing panic is the alleged permission granted by the Meghalaya administration for illegal hill-cutting activities in the Jorabat region. Locals fear that such unchecked excavation is further destabilising the terrain, significantly increasing the risk of landslides.

The lack of a coordinated response from the Meghalaya government has further intensified public frustration. The pressing question now remains: how long will this crisis be ignored?
