Ahead of the upcoming Assam assembly elections, the commissioning of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), including the set of candidates for all 126 assembly constituencies of the state, has been completed, the office of the chief electoral officer (CEO), Assam, informed on Sunday.
A total of 41,320 Ballot Units (BU), 43,975 Control Units (CU), and 43,997 VVPATs have been commissioned for the upcoming polls, voting for which will be held in a single phase on April 9 across the state. The total commissioned units include reserve machines, which will be used across the 31,490 polling stations of Assam, if needed.
According to a statement, the commissioning exercise was carried out between March 31 (Tuesday) and April 4 (Saturday) at premises pre-notified by the district election officers (DEOs) of the respective districts.
The commissioning process was done in the presence of candidates contesting in the upcoming polls or their authorised representatives, in order to ensure full transparency and adherence to the prescribed guidelines, the CEO's office said.
The official statement also added that authorised engineers and technical personnel from the Electronics Corporation of India Ltd. (ECIL) assisted in the commissioning process for accurate, reliable and proper configuration of the machines.
