A routine forest visit turned into a devastating tragedy on Friday morning when four women were killed in a tiger attack in the Gunjewahi forest area under Sindewahi taluka of Chandrapur district, Maharashtra. The incident has left nearby villages in shock and has triggered fresh concerns over safety during seasonal forest collection activities.
According to the report, the victims had entered the forest early in the morning to collect tendu leaves, a common seasonal livelihood activity for many villagers in the region. As the tendu leaf collection season had just begun, several groups were seen entering forest patches since dawn.
Around 8 am, the women were reportedly gathering leaves deep in the forest when a tiger suddenly emerged from nearby dense vegetation and launched a fierce attack. Villagers later said the assault was swift and unexpected, giving the group no opportunity to escape or defend themselves. All four women succumbed to their injuries at the spot.
The deceased have been identified as Kavdubai Dadaji Mohurle (45), Anubai Dadaji Mohurle (46), Sangeeta Santosh Chaudhary (36), and Sunita Kaushik Mohurle (33).
The report confirmed that the incident quickly drew forest officials and police to the site. Sindewahi Forest Range Officer Anjali Sayankar, along with field staff and local police teams, reached the location soon after being informed. A preliminary inspection of the area has been completed, and an investigation is underway to assess the circumstances of the attack and the animal's movements.
Following the tragedy, fear and anger have spread across Gunjewahi and the surrounding villages. Residents say such incidents highlight the constant risk faced by tendu leaf collectors, who depend on forest produce for their livelihood despite known dangers in wildlife zones.
As per the report, the Forest Department has urged people to exercise extreme caution while entering forest areas, particularly during the collection season when human movement inside forests increases significantly. Additional patrolling has also been intensified in the region to prevent further incidents.
