Mridumudra had remained in critical condition at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) since the violent attack that took place on the night of May 31 at Gangapur under Mukalmua. Despite undergoing prolonged treatment at GMCH, she could not recover from her injuries and passed away on July 3.
The attack had earlier claimed the life of 19-year-old Madhurjya Barman, who was declared dead at the scene. Madhurjya, a resident of Balipathar in Chamata, was serving as the Assistant General Secretary of the West Nalbari Regional Students' Union.
According to the police, the two victims were travelling home on a scooter from Nalbari town when they were allegedly stopped and attacked by Roz Ali. Locals later found both lying critically injured by the roadside. While Madhurjya died before he could receive medical attention, Mridumudra was rushed to a nearby hospital and later referred to GMCH due to the severity of her injuries.
What GMCH Superintendent Said
According to the Superintendent of GMCH, Deka had undergone two surgeries during her treatment. “She had shown considerable improvement and we had even started physiotherapy. Treatment was being carried out properly under a team of specialist doctors,” the Superintendent said.
However, her condition began to deteriorate in recent days. “Over the past few days, she became unwell, and in the last 72 hours, her condition worsened significantly. She had to be put on ventilator support yesterday,” the official added.
The Superintendent further informed that Deka suffered two cardiac arrests before finally succumbing at around 7:30 am.
It was also revealed that about five days ago, a team from Nalbari Police had visited the hospital and recorded her statement.
Notably, the incident had triggered massive protests in Nalbari, with student organisations, local residents and various groups demanding stringent action against those responsible.
The case also gained significant public attention after some organisations attempted to associate it with allegations of "love jihad". However, investigators have not found evidence to substantiate those claims, and Assam Police has not officially linked the crime to any such motive.
Meanwhile, the prime accused, Roz Ali, was killed during a police encounter in Mukalmua while police were carrying out an operation in connection with the case.
