Sydney Airport Supports Australia's SAF Industry Plans

Sydney Airport Welcomes Federal Budget Measures for SAF Development

Sydney Airport has welcomed the Australian Government's Federal Budget announcements aimed at supporting the development and adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) across the country.

The budget package includes plans to introduce a low-carbon liquid fuel demand-side measure, which will be developed in consultation with industry stakeholders. The Government also confirmed the launch of the Cleaner Fuels Program to support local SAF production in Australia.

 Scott Charlton

Sydney Airport CEO Scott Charlton said the policy package addresses both fuel demand and supply, an approach that the aviation industry has been seeking for several years.

He noted that SAF presents an opportunity to strengthen Australia's fuel production capabilities and reduce reliance on imported liquid fuels. He also said SAF production using Australian feedstocks could support employment opportunities across regional and agricultural communities.

According to Charlton, the introduction of a SAF demand-side measure alongside the Cleaner Fuels Program marks progress towards establishing a domestic SAF industry while improving long-term fuel security and resilience.

He added that cooperation between government and industry will play an important role during the policy design process to ensure Australia develops a practical and internationally competitive SAF framework.

Sydney Airport also referenced research conducted in March 2026, which found that 72% of Australians support the development of a domestic SAF industry, while 6% expressed opposition.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel is increasingly being explored by airlines and aviation stakeholders as part of efforts to reduce emissions and support long-term sustainability goals within the aviation sector.
