Songkran Festival 2026 to Go Ahead with Events Across All Regions

Thai authorities have stated that preparations are underway to ensure smooth operations throughout the holiday period. Travellers are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance, while TAT will continue to provide updates as needed.

Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, said, "We are aware that global events have created uncertainty for travellers. We want to be clear: Songkran 2026 will take place as planned across every region of Thailand. The spirit of this festival and Thailand's welcome remains unchanged."

Recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Songkran reflects longstanding Thai traditions centred around family, respect, and renewal. Traditional practices such as merit-making, temple visits, and water-pouring rituals for elders continue to form the cultural foundation of the festival, alongside modern celebrations.

In Bangkok, a series of major events is scheduled between 9 and 15 April. Key highlights include the Maha Songkran World Event at Benjakitti Park, riverside celebrations at ICONSIAM and Asiatique The Riverfront, and music-led festivals such as S2O and Siam Songkran. Popular areas including Silom Road and Siam Square are expected to once again serve as major hubs for water celebrations.

Across the country, Songkran is marked by diverse regional traditions. In the Central region, destinations such as Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya will host temple-based activities and the well-known elephant water-splashing events. Northern cities including Chiang Mai, Sukhothai, and Nan are recognised for their extended celebrations rooted in local heritage.

In the East, Chon Buri's Wan Lai tradition extends festivities beyond the main dates, particularly in Pattaya and surrounding coastal areas. The Northeast, including Khon Kaen and Udon Thani, combines cultural rituals with urban celebrations, while southern destinations such as Phuket, Surat Thani, and Chumphon offer beachside Songkran experiences.

A wide range of events is scheduled nationwide throughout April, including cultural festivals, music events, parades, and community celebrations across Bangkok, the Central Plains, the North, Northeast, East, and South of Thailand.

Authorities continue to coordinate across regions to ensure that infrastructure, safety measures, and tourism services are fully prepared to accommodate visitors during one of Thailand's most significant annual festivals.
