Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday (28 April) laid the foundation stone for Google's data centre at Tarluvada on the outskirts of Visakhapatnam, marking the rollout of one of the biggest single foreign direct investment projects in the country, The Hindu reported .

Spread over 601.4 acres, the 1-Gigawatt hyperscale AI data centre is being built at an outlay of Rs 1.35 lakh crore.

The facility will be operated by Google's subsidiary Raiden Infotech together with Adani Infra, while AdaniConneX and Airtel Nxtra are also part of the broader Google-Adani-Airtel arrangement, which falls within Google's announced $15 billion commitment to Andhra Pradesh.

Union Ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw, Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu and Pemmasani Chandrasekhar, IT Minister Nara Lokesh, district in-charge Minister Dola Sree Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy, MP M. Sribharat, Adani Digital Director Jeet Adani and senior Google representatives were present.

Addressing the gathering, Naidu said the data centre would be the largest of its kind in Asia and would put Andhra Pradesh on the global tech map.

He added that the upcoming undersea cable landing station at Visakhapatnam would link the city to Australia, the US west coast, West Asia and the Cape of Good Hope.

He also revealed that the centre is set to be inaugurated on 28 September, 2028, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi being invited for the event.

"Andhra Pradesh is emerging as India's premier investment destination, powered by speed, trust, and ease of doing business. Google's AI hub in Visakhapatnam will be a cornerstone of our growing tech corridor," Naidu said.

"While the world searches on Google, Google has searched and chosen Andhra Pradesh," he added.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the project would propel Visakhapatnam into the league of India's top tech destinations. "Like Cyberabad, it will become AI-patnam," he said.

Adani Digital Labs Director Jeet Adani highlighted India's energy edge in powering AI growth. "AI may be written in code, but it runs on electricity," he said.
