Ahmedabad: Piyushbhai Desai, Chairman of Wagh Bakri Tea Group, passed away on September 15, 2026, marking the end of a career spanning more than six decades in the Indian tea industry.
Desai was a founding member of the Gujarat Tea Traders Association (GTTA), Western India Tea Dealers Association (WITDA) and Federation of All India Tea Traders Associations (FAITTA). He also served as the first president of GTTA, contributing to the development of the tea trade community in Gujarat. Earlier this year, the Northeastern Tea Association honoured Desai with its Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the Indian tea industry. Beyond the tea business, Desai was associated with several social and community initiatives.
Influenced by Gandhian philosophy, he worked closely with Gujarat Vidhyapith. He also served as President of the Blind People's Association (India) for approximately two years and was a Trustee of Sadvichar Parivar, contributing to its initiatives and activities. Desai remained actively involved with Wagh Bakri Tea Group for several decades and was closely associated with its affairs until 2020. He subsequently continued to serve as a mentor to the next generation, passing on the values that shaped his approach to business.
The foundation established during his tenure supported the next generation of leadership at Wagh Bakri Tea Group, which has since expanded its presence and evolved into a household name among tea consumers in India and international markets. Desai's contribution to the tea industry also extended to institution building and industry associations. His work across business, education and community initiatives reflected his emphasis on social responsibility and the principle of giving back to society. His passing marks the loss of a veteran of the Indian tea industry, with his legacy continuing through Wagh Bakri Tea Group, the industry institutions he helped establish and the values he passed on to the next generation.
