Early Life
During her childhood Parveen’s family always struggled with finances, and there was a time they could not even afford boxing gloves. However, when, in 2011, a boxing academy was started by her village’s then Sarpanch, Sudhir Hooda, he encouraged youngsters to take up sports. Inspired by Indian boxing stars Mary Kom and Vijender Singh, Parveen decided to join the academy and began training.
As a child, she was always fearless and often got into fights with boys at school. Her coaches noticed her spirit and encouraged the young Parveen to utilize this energy in boxing. She began working on her skills then and turned into one of the most promising young boxers of Haryana.
Parveen got her first breakthrough in 2019, when she defeated India’s veteran boxer L. Sarita Devi during the national selection trials. The same year, she won a gold medal at the South Asian Games. This was the beginning of her successful international boxing career.
Parveen Hooda Boxing Career
After gaining national success, Parveen continued her impressive run and clinched a gold medal at the Senior National Boxing Championships in 2021. This stunning victory established her as one of India’s top boxers in the lightweight division. Parveen’s biggest breakthrough came in 2022 when she participated in the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Turkey. She won the bronze medal at the event and, later that year, claimed the gold medal at the Asian Boxing Championships in Jordan.
After achieving these successes, Parveen went on to represent India at the 2022 Asian Games, where she reached the semi-finals and initially secured a bronze medal. However, in 2024, the medal was withdrawn after Hooda was suspended by the International Testing Agency for repeated whereabouts failures under anti-doping rules. (Note: This suspension was not related to testing positive for a banned substance.)
After serving her suspension, Parveen returned to international boxing and resumed competing for India. She is now representing India at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow.
