Hyderabad fans have been worried ever since SS Rajamouli confirmed that Varanasi is being shot for IMAX. With no IMAX screen in either Andhra Pradesh or Telangana, many wondered how they would experience the film the way Rajamouli intended.
The truth is that Hyderabad audiences do not need to panic at all. This is because an even more premium format is coming to the city.
A massive 75-foot Dolby Cinema is now being built in Hyderabad. It is set to be the biggest Dolby Cinema screen in the world. It will also be larger than the biggest digital IMAX screen in India. Dolby Vision, which is the projection technology used in this format, is known for its great clarity, deep blacks, and vivid HDR colors. For visually rich films, Dolby Vision often delivers better picture quality than IMAX Laser. This is especially true during dark or high contrast scenes.
Dolby Cinema is also far more expensive to build than IMAX. Its dual laser E3LH projection system costs nearly twice as much as an IMAX Laser XT setup. When this is combined with Dolby Atmos sound, a pitch-black auditorium design, and steep stadium seating, the experience becomes very immersive. Many film lovers even consider it superior to IMAX in overall visual and audio quality.
This makes it perfect for a film like Varanasi. The movie is expected to feature grand visuals, world building, mythology, and a large cinematic scale. It will rely heavily on color depth and dynamic contrast. Even if Hyderabad does not get an IMAX screen before the release, Dolby Cinema will still offer one of the best platforms in India to watch Rajamouli's masterpiece.
The lack of IMAX screens in the Telugu states is disappointing. Even then, Hyderabad audiences will not miss out. They may actually experience Varanasi in a format that showcases the film's visuals even better.
If everything goes as planned, Hyderabad audiences may even get to watch Avatar: Fire and Ash in Dolby Cinema by December 2025. Many cinephiles say this format offers an experience beyond imagination.
With a world class Dolby Cinema on the way, the city is ready for Mahesh Babu and Rajamouli's major 2027 spectacle.
